KIANDUTU SETTLEMENT PROFILE, THIKA, KENYA

The profiling of the settlement was conducted concurrently using three techniques: enumeration, mapping, and household survey. enumeration involved the administration of an enumeration form devised and adjusted in community meetings, designed to capture relevant information about each household. This process was conducted by members from the local community. The mapping process entailed locating positions of building structures, infrastructure networks, and amenities. This process was coordinated by a technical team from MuST assisted by University of Nairobi Team. The household survey was spearheaded by University of Nairobi Team which aimed to incorporate scientific research methodology into the process. Kiandutu consists of 10 village clusters. For purposes of the household survey, each cluster was divided into blocks of 20m by 20m and a Kth factor was established for the selection of sample blocks to administer questionnaires through a systematic process. The household survey utilized a random sample of 350 household questionnaires. This report presents analysis of both the household survey and mapping process carried out by CURI in collaboration with MuST and Kiandutu community.

It is envisaged that findings from the survey and mapping analysis will eventually be combined with findings from the community enumeration process. By integrating the three components of study – enumeration, survey, and mapping – a comprehensive and accurate profile of the settlement will be achieved. such a report will form valuable baseline information for subsequent community-centered planning and upgrading process. Overall, the preparation of the settlement profile has enabled the community of Kiandutu to tell their story and document it in form of up-to-date baseline data and relevant narratives that puts the community at a vantage position and preparedness for settlement upgrading. the key outputs of this report consist of introduction and background to Kiandutu settlement, a review of current policy and approaches, methodology, situation analysis and synthesis. the profile is presented in form of tables, text and thematic maps.
